Ohio man arrested in Indiana woman's 2003 killing, assault

MARION, Ind. (AP) - An Ohio man is awaiting extradition to Indiana to face charges in the 2003 sexual assault and killing of an Indiana woman.

Marion police say DNA evidence collected from the killing of 81-year-old Betty Payne of Marion matched a suspect in three assaults - two in Ohio and one in Florida. Payne was found strangled inside her home more than 13 years ago on May 12, 2003. The DNA results came from the Indiana State Police Laboratory.

Police identified the suspect in the Florida case and found him jailed in Ohio. The matches came after police obtained a search warrant for the suspect's DNA.

The suspect declined to waive extradition to Grant County, Indiana, and is now waiting for the Indiana governor to issue a warrant for his arrest to Ohio's governor.
