Children's Author to Appear at Literacy Night on November 15 @ 6:30 p.m.

Have fun with reading!

Immanuel Lutheran School will be hosting an author/illustrator visit at its Literacy Night on Tuesday, November 15th, from 6:30 - 8:00 pm. A variety of activities are planned. Headlining the event, author/illustrator Kevin Luthardt will take the students through the process of creating a picture book from generating a story idea to the published book.

The evening is designed to appeal to all students - preschool - eighth grade. For the younger children, preschool through first grade, Immanuel's Early Childhood and elementary teachers will host a special event just for them - three different story times with make-and-take activities at each. The opening acts for our author will be selected middle school students performing some of their creative writing selections. Student literacy work will be on display. Usborne books will also be hosting a $5 Book Fair the evening of Literacy Night, as well as during the school day on Tuesday and Wednesday. All attendees will have a chance to win a free book.

"Developing a love of reading is so important for children of all ages. That's one reason Immanuel is so committed to growing that love. Having a published author come to share with the children what it is like to write and illustrate is so exciting and provides another avenue for the kids to engage in literacy," said Principal Delaine Schiestel.

Adds Ruth Crimmins, Immanuel's library learning center director, "Reading and writing is such an integral part of the education here at Immanuel. In this Literacy Night, we hope to encourage students in their reading and writing as they listen to an author explain how he writes stories and draws illustrations. We will share our love for books by telling stories to our younger students and their families as well as have other reading activities. With all these activities, we are encouraging our students to become life-long readers."

For Marlene Tres, Immanuel's Early Childhood Director, ensuring that preschoolers would have something special just for them at Literacy Night was job one. That's why the early childhood and primary teachers will be reading fun, age-appropriate books to the children. "Reading is the most important thing parents and teachers can do with children to encourage a desire to learn to read and lifelong passion of reading," Tres emphasizes.
