Community placing moratorium on opioid treatment facilities

NEW ALBANY, Ind. (AP) - A southern Indiana community has decided to place a six-month moratorium on methadone or suboxone clinics.

The (Jeffersonville) News and Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/2eAErRS ) the city council in New Albany on Monday approved a resolution about such opioid treatment facilities.

The resolution passed unanimously following an amendment that excludes drug treatment facilities that offer counseling and referral services. It awaits final approval from the mayor's office.

Greg Phipps, vice president and District 3 councilman, says that careful planning of appropriate placement for those facilities is important. He said in other communities there have been concerns by neighbors, but the city also needs to help address opioid addiction.
