Fire destroys most of Montgomery County road truck fleet
CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. (AP) - Authorities say a fire has destroyed most of the trucks used on a daily basis by the Montgomery County Highway Department.
No injuries were reported in the Sunday night fire that destroyed about 15 vehicles. Damage from the fire was estimated at more than $1.5 million.
A building housing the trucks was found engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived. Explosions were heard as the fire burned.
A few trucks weren't damaged in the fire. Also, officials say snow plow blades weren't in the building. The county plans to look into leasing trucks, since officials estimate that crews need at least 13 trucks to cover about 850 miles of roads in the county.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
