Injured Austria defender Proedl to miss Ireland qualifier

VIENNA (AP) - The Austrian football federation says Watford defender Sebastian Proedl will miss next week's World Cup qualifier against Ireland and a friendly against Slovakia because of a groin injury.

The federation says coach Marcel Koller has called up Michael Madl as a replacement for Proedl. The Fulham defender could earn his first cap for the national team.

Austria plays Ireland at the sold-out Ernst Happel Stadium in Vienna on Nov. 12, and hosts Slovakia at the same venue three days later.

After three qualifying matches for the 2018 World Cup, Ireland and Serbia lead Group D with seven points. Wales has five points and Austria has four. Georgia and Moldova are the other teams in the group.
