Library wise use of your tax dollars

I have been a resident of East Dundee for over 10 years, and a frequent user of the Dundee Library. I will be voting yes to the Fox River Valley Public Library District referendum on Nov. 8.

The increase in the small portion of my property tax bill that goes to the library will far outweigh what I would spend if I had to buy the books I read every year.

But I see the referendum as more than benefiting just me. I see it as an investment in my community. I want students to have a place to go after school in an environment that encourages knowledge and reading. I want young parents to have a place to bring their little children to play, learn, and explore. I think it's important that seniors have a place that will help them navigate the constantly changing digital world. I want those who are new to our country to have a place where a friendly face will help them find the answers to their questions. And none of that comes with an admission fee or an hourly rate.

But insufficient revenue and space, which is out of kilter with the population served, means some people are turned away or put on waiting lists. Sometimes, it is hard to find value in the dollars you spend, but when it comes to our library the value is right in front your face.
