Police investigating robbery, burglaries at Spring Hill Mall

A mall employee was robbed by two men, and four businesses were burglarized early Tuesday at Spring Hill Mall in West Dundee, police said.

Authorities arrived about 3 a.m. and searched the property, but the suspects fled before they arrived, West Dundee Police Chief Andrew Wieteska said. As of Wednesday afternoon police have yet to identify a person of interest.

Cash and store property were stolen from the businesses, Wieteska said, though he declined to disclose which stores were burglarized. The employee sustained minor injuries and is expected to recover.

Wieteska said the suspects likely entered by forcing open a door in a new wing of the mall, which is under construction. Carpentersville and West Dundee police are investigating.

"We're following some good leads right now," Wieteska said, noting police obtained physical evidence and video surveillance footage.

In the meantime, he said, the mall has stepped up security and is taking extra safety precautions. Spring Hill Mall representatives could not immediately be reached for comment Wednesday.

Anyone who witnessed any suspicious activity near the mall between 11 p.m. Monday and 3 a.m. Tuesday are asked to call police at (847) 551-3810, or email tips to stopcrime@wdundee.org.
