Kankakee museum plans Latino history exhibit for next year

KANKAKEE, Ill. (AP) - Efforts are underway to create a Latino history exhibit at the Kankakee County Museum.

The museum tentatively is scheduled to display the exhibit from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 of next year. It will coincide with next fall's National Hispanic Heritage Month. The (Kankakee) Daily Journal reports (http://bit.ly/2ejtN53 ) the Latino population is the fastest-growing demographic in the area.

Museum curator Katey Moore says it's been difficult to conduct research because there's little data on the population. In response, the museum has partnered with the Kankakee County Hispanic Partnership which oversees Hispanic Outreach at the Kankakee Public Library. They will hold a series of community events to gather information and one-on-one interview with immigrants for the project. One already was held last week.
