Indiana man charged with trying to hire man to kill ex-wife

NEW ALBANY, Ind. (AP) - A southern Indiana man has been charged with trying to hire someone to kill his ex-wife.

Mark McCane of Floyds Knobs is charged with conspiracy to commit murder and theft of a firearm. Floyd County Prosecutor Keith Henderson said Tuesday that McCane paid $1,200 to a man to carry out the crime.

Authorities say that man isn't charged and is cooperating with police. An affidavit says the man told police he never intended to hurt the woman and instead planned to take more money from McCane.

Henderson says the couple had an ongoing child custody case.

Floyd Superior Court Judge Susan Orth entered a not guilty plea on McCane's behalf. Online court records showed a $25,000 cash bond was posted Tuesday.

A home phone for a Mark McCane in Floyds Knobs rang unanswered.
