Indiana city wants to quickly resolve yard signs lawsuit

BEDFORD, Ind. (AP) - Officials in the southern Indiana city of Bedford say they hope to quickly resolve a resident's lawsuit that says a new yard sign law infringes on political expression.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana is suing in federal court on behalf of Samuel Shaw, who says he had several political signs in his yard before the city last month told him he was violating the law. City officials said Monday that the new law was written to comply with a Supreme Court ruling that voided sign ordinances based on content restrictions.

City officials say the new law specifies size and number of signs but doesn't restrict content. They say there's not enough case law to determine best practices after the high court's ruling. The city said it wants to resolve the lawsuit "as quickly as possible."
