Probation, community service in Kane court clerk theft

A former Kane County Circuit Court deputy clerk was sentenced to 2½ years of probation Friday after pleading guilty to stealing money she was responsible for in her job.

Kelli D. Brackett, 40, of the 0-99 block of South Farnsworth Avenue, Aurora, also must perform 300 hours of community service and repay the $955 she stole under the plea accepted by Judge Linda Abrahamson.

Prosecutors dismissed charges of felony forgery and theft in exchange for Brackett's guilty plea to felony official misconduct.

Brackett was accused of stealing money from Sept. 1, 2014, to Aug. 31, 2015, from the clerk's office while performing her official duties. She altered paperwork on fines owed to the office by residents and pocketed the money.

Brackett was arrested in early 2016 and was free on $500 bond. She did not have previous convictions in Kane County.

If Brackett violates her probation, she could be resentenced to additional probation, jail or up to five years in prison.

During probation she is prohibited from being employed in a position of public trust.
