Stevenson High weighing $5.2 million worth of summer construction projects

Stevenson High School officials are considering undertaking more than $5.2 million in campus construction projects during the summer 2017 break.

Thirteen projects are being considered, down from a previous list of 17.

The biggest is the proposed renovation of the East Building's cafeteria and kitchen at the Lincolnshire school, work that could cost more than $1.4 million. Officials want to update the space so it resembles the West Building's cafeteria, which was renovated this summer.

Another costly project could be the replacement of the roof over the performing arts center. It could run more than $853,000, officials said.

Work is planned for inside the performing arts center, too.

Officials are considering replacing the band shell that reflects sound from the stage to the audience. The main stage floor and the theater's rigging for set pieces also could be replaced. Those projects could cost about $687,000, officials said.

Other projects being considered include:

• Completion of the West Building cafeteria renovation, which could cost more than $485,000.

• Construction of a new press box at the school stadium, estimated at more than $281,000.

• Repairs to Stevenson Drive, the main road leading to campus, at a potential cost of nearly $185,000.

• New flooring and lighting in a weight room and wrestling gym, at a potential cost of more than $615,000.

"These rooms haven't been touched since they opened in 1985," school spokesman Jim Conrey said of those athletic facilities.

Cost estimates are expected to be finalized in February 2017. The school board will await those estimates before approving the projects, Conrey said.

A parking lot repaving, bathroom renovations and roof repairs were among the projects included in a $5.1 million construction package completed this summer.
