Families mark Day of the Dead in Gurnee

Children decorated ornate sugar skulls while their parents learned about one of the most popular days in Latino culture Sunday when Academia Cultural Xilotl of Waukegan hosted its Day of the Dead workshop at the Warren-Newport Public Library in Gurnee.

The free event, which also featured guest speakers, jewelry making, tissue paper art and papier-mâché, included workshops offered in English and Spanish.

The mission of the Academia Cultural Xilotl is to preserve the Mexican and Latin-American culture through history, art and dance. The group runs the workshops from September to November.
