Three men up for filling Batavia Ward 1 vacancy

Carl Dinwiddie is going to try, for the third time, to land a seat on the Batavia City Council.

He is one of three men being considered for the Ward 1 vacancy created by the resignation of Carl Fischer.

Aldermen will interview Dinwiddie; business owner Fernando Martinez; and Scott Salvati will be interviewed at a committee-of-the-whole meeting at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The committee will then recommend who it wants Mayor Jeff Schielke to appoint.

Dinwiddie applied for a Ward 1 vacancy in 2014, but the council chose Fischer. Dinwiddie then ran against Fischer in 2015 and lost.

He is a retired chief of the central region for the National Transportation Safety Board. He is active with the Batavia Overseas Post 1197, Veterans of Foreign Wars, including organizing the annual Loyalty Day Parade. Dinwiddie lives on Pine Street.

Martinez, according to his resume, owns the El Taco Grande restaurant on North River Street in Batavia. He and his wife also own the Shear Ambition hair salon. He is a 1994 graduate of Batavia High School, and has an associate degree from Waubonsee Community College. He lives on Chillem Drive.

Salvati is president of Lighthouse Marketing Services Inc. of Batavia. He is the secretary of the executive council of First Baptist Church of Geneva, and has a bachelor's degree in finance from the University of Iowa. He lives on Thrun Drive.

The person selected would be sworn in at the council's Nov. 7 meeting, and serve through the end of April.

The remainder of the term, through April 2019, will be up for election in April.
