Crash kills highway worker along Interstate 65 in Gary

GARY, Ind. (AP) - Indiana State Police say a worker has died after being struck by an SUV in a highway construction zone in Gary.

Police say 35-year-old Brandon Beau Dewayne Fiscus of LaPorte was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident Wednesday morning on Interstate 65.

Police say the SUV driven by 23-year-old Jasmine Tirado of Merrillville was northbound on the highway and changing lanes to move to the right when her vehicle struck a construction barrel separating the work zone from traffic, continued into the construction area, struck another barrel and then hit Fiscus. He bounced off her windshield and a pickup truck in the work zone and landed about 100 feet from the impact.

The crash occurred about 9:30 a.m. and closed all northbound lanes for about three hours.
