Cruelty sentencing was no deterrent
I'm stunned that the horrible death of two dogs confined in an overheated windowless van is worth only 30 days in jail for owner Griselda Martinez.
Her sentence included a fine of $6,000-plus and two years' probation.
The judge found her guilty of failing to provide humane care of the 11 dogs found in her van without water or food, sitting in urine and feces and confined in stacked crates.
This sentence is no deterrent against inhumane treatment of animals. At least Cook County Judge Marc Martin ordered Martinez to start serving her jail time immediately.
But once she's free and the probation years end, Martinez can obtain more dogs. There's nothing to prevent her from doing the same cruel thing to innocent animals.
