Illinois Dunesland Garden Club kicks off its year

Submitted by Fran Isaac

The Illinois Dunesland Garden Club held its annual kickoff luncheon Tuesday, Sept. 13, at Bonniebrook Golf Clubhouse in Waukegan.

This luncheon heralds a new year of garden club meetings and workshops. Members enjoyed a lunch as they learned the results of their annual garden walk raffle and were introduced to the upcoming programs and speakers.

On display were recent creations from the concrete leaf workshop held a week prior to the meeting, and a demonstration on how to make stem cuttings for propagation of this year's annuals to use in the garden next year.

The garden club meets at 1 p.m. the second Tuesday of the month at the Zion-Benton Public Library in October, November, and January through April. December, May, and June meetings are luncheons; commencement and location are found in their yearbook.

Each regular meeting includes a speaker and many times a workshop having to do with gardening and conservation. The meetings are open to the public at no charge.

The next IDGC meeting will take place Tuesday, Oct. 11, and the program will be "Bale Gardening: No Dirt Needed."
