Solution seeking a problem?

The weekend addition of the Octane Lounge had an article on self-driving cars. Is there really a demand for this type of vehicles? Or is this a solution looking for a problem? Is this something the high-tech community in Silicon Valley is trying to jam down our gullets, if we like or want it or not? As a driver/consumer, one of my concerns is. how much is this going to jack up the price of a car? Half of the new stuff they put on new cars and tout have little or no appeal and add unneeded cost to the vehicle.
