Anderson woman gets 38 years in beating death of girl, 12
ANDERSON, Ind. (AP) - A judge has sentenced a central Indiana woman to the maximum 38 years in prison after she pleaded guilty to battery and neglect in the death of a 12-year-old girl she was guardian of.
Forty-six-year-old Denell Roberts of Anderson received 30 years Tuesday on the battery charge and eight years for neglect.
The (Anderson) Herald Bulletin reports (http://bit.ly/2dL1hf4) the girl was injured Oct. 27, 2015, and died three weeks later at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis after being removed from life support.
Riley pediatrician Dr. Ralph Hicks said there was evidence the girl suffered seven broken ribs about 10 to 14 days before the incident. There was also evidence of a broken vertebrae.
Roberts told the court she didn't intend for the girl to die.
