Girls golf: Barrington takes charge in Lake Forest regional
There have been an awful lot of memorable days for Barrington's girls golf team this season.
The Fillies added another one on Wednesday, easily outdistancing the field at the Lake Forest Class 2A regional with a score of 309.
The Mid-Suburban League champs were 43 strokes ahead of runner-up Buffalo Grove at the Deerpath Golf Club in Lake Forest.
The host Scouts (353) were the third and final team to qualify for Monday's Buffalo Grove sectional as they won a tiebreaker from Highland Park which also shot a 353.
Rounding out the field were Deerfield (355), Stevenson (365), Vernon Hills (370), Wheeling (399), Lake Zurich (415) and Palatine (426).
The Fillies took the top two spots in the individual competition with sophomore Nicole Ciskowski (one-under-72) and senior Reena Sulkar (74).
Completing their score card were senior Shivani Majmudar (81) and freshman Caroline Smith (83).
"Wow, what a day for the team," said Hall of Fame coach Jodi Schoeck, who guided the Fillies to their 17th regional since 1987. "Everyone was pumped up to begin regionals. We have pride in our tradition and this team carried on the tradition of hard work, dedication and commitment to excellence."
Ciskowski went 34 and 37 on the front and back nine while Sulkar scored a 39 and 35.
"Nicole and Reena were the one-two punch we needed to get a jump on the competition," Schoeck said. "Nicole came into the day very confident in her game plan for the course. She was able to go for the par 5s in two. Her putter and driver were both on fire."
The Fillies are now looking forward to Monday's sectional.
"This team of 10 players has been focused on the fundamentals and that paid off big today," Schoeck said. "All year our mantra has been to finish strong and each of the girls did that today. This is only the first step for the team this post season. I am so glad to have the team together for another big tournament on Monday."
Leading the Bison to their second-place finish were junior Haeri Lee (82), junior Jasmine Yi (82), senior Grace Gran (92) and senior Katie Fontanetta (96).
"I'm really proud of the girls." said Bison coach Matt Myers." They didn't play their best golf but they battled all day long and finished their rounds strong. They could have all easily folded at some point today and each was able to display perseverance that helped our team."
Myers said it was a learning experience.
"We definitely learned that every shot matters," he said. "Thankfully, we made a lot of knee-buckling putts at the end that advanced us to the sectional. The girls are excited about having another opportunity to play."
Area individual qualifers included Wheeling sophomore Adrienne Rohwedder (76), Wheeling freshman Symantha Rohwedder (79) and Palatine junior Jenny Myslinski (90).
