St. James 10th-graders receive Confirmation

Culminating two years of preparation, 110 10th-grade students received the sacrament of Confirmation at St. James on Saturday, Sept. 17.

By standing in front of Bishop Francis Kane and receiving the sacrament of Confirmation, students committed to taking responsibility for their faith life in the future. As part of the two-year Confirmation program, students studied their faith in class, gathered for retreat and served others in a variety of volunteer activities. They also met with their sponsors to discuss how to live a faith-filled life.

"We must know our faith, live our faith, pray our faith and celebrate our faith," Bishop Kane told the students during his homily.

According to Catholic catechism, by the sacrament of Confirmation, (the baptized) are more perfectly bound to the church and are enriched with a special strength of the Holy Spirit. Hence, they are, as true witnesses of Christ, more strictly obliged to spread and defend the faith by word and deed.

"St. James is blessed to have such fine young people within this parish to continue to carry the torch of faith with us," said Carrie Conley and Rebecca Linscott, co-coordinators of religious education at St. James.

"We thank God for all of the adult catechists who have prepared these students. We will be praying for the parents and sponsors of these students. And, lastly, we will be praying for the students themselves, that they may see God in their lives and know that this is just the next step in a lifelong faith journey."
