Rhode Island town takes stand against power plant

BURRILLVILLE, R.I. (AP) - A Rhode Island town has taken a largely symbolic vote to oppose plans for a gas-fired power plant in the community.

The Providence Journal (http://bit.ly/2cXfxNC ) reports that the Burrillville Town Council on Thursday unanimously voted to oppose Chicago-based Invenergy's proposal after more than a year of refraining from taking a position.

Council President John Pacheco says town leaders have tried to stay neutral but he describes the $700 million project as a monstrosity.

The vote is largely symbolic because Rhode Island's Energy Facility Siting Board is the lead authority that will decide the plant's fate.

The town is also asking for support from all other Rhode Island cities and towns and nearby communities in Connecticut and Massachusetts. Burrillville is in Rhode Island's rural northwestern corner.
