Indiana school names center after late human rights activist

NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. (AP) - Manchester University has announced it will name a $1 million intercultural center in memory of Jean Childs Young, an educator and human rights activist and the late wife of former U.N. Ambassador Andrew Young.

Young graduated from Manchester in 1954 and she served Manchester as a trustee from 1975 to 1979. She died of liver cancer in 1994 at the age of 61.

She was involved in several major civil rights demonstrations. In 1978, President Carter appointed her to chair the U.S. National Commission of the International Year of the Child.

The new building will feature a permanent display honoring Young. Plans also call for a domed space designed to be used as a focal point for northeast Indiana discussions about diversity and inclusion.
