Explore Punk Rock in 1977 with WBEZ's Sound Opinions

The Arlington Heights Memorial Library, in partnership with the Metropolis Performing Arts Centre, presents "Punk Rock 1977: The Sound of Genius" at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19, at the Metropolis Performing Arts Centre, 111 W. Campbell St., in Arlington Heights.

In "The Geography of Genius: A Search for the World's Most Creative Places, from Ancient Athens to Silicon Valley," the selected title for this year's One Book, One Village community read, author Eric Weiner examines the idea of particularly "magical" times and places that result in a creative explosion.

In a program specially developed for the Arlington Heights Memorial Library, the hosts of WBEZ's Sound Opinions, Jim DeRogatis and Greg Kot, will discuss 1977, the year punk music emerged from London and New York.

Punk rock, which has proved influential on everything that's followed, erupted in those two cities out of an uneasy stew of economic inequality, racial tensions, budding anger, and a sense that we all had "no future."

This program will be presented at Metropolis Performing Arts Centre in front of a live audience as part of partnership between the library and Metropolis. A question and answer period will follow the presentation.
