Today's Republicans different from part of the past

In "Your Views" column of Aug. 31, Joe Deitschel demonstrates that he has just enough information to be dangerous by stating that "Republicans passed the Civil Rights Act in 1964," just as they won the Civil War against slavery and supported women's rights.

While that is true, what he doesn't comprehend is that before 1964, Republicans were basically still Northern Liberal Yankees, and Southern Democrats were still Racist Rebels. And it was exactly BECAUSE Democratic President Johnson supported the Civil Rights Act in 1964 that racist Southern Democrats switched parties.

And the reason why today's Republicans want to limit voting with voter ID and other restrictions is because they know blacks and other minorities tend to vote Democrat. It has almost nothing to do with "honest elections," because voter fraud actually is close to zero.

Getting struck by lightning is more common, and of the minuscule percentage of most voter fraud today is actually Republican. These are whole facts, not deceptive half-truths as he states.
