Who's Who in Health Care: Mary Lou Mastro, President & CEO, Elmhurst Memorial Healthcare

Since 2013, Mary Lou Mastro, has been president & CEO of Elmhurst Memorial Healthcare, which has 2,600 employees and annual revenue of $300 million, and provides services at numerous locations throughout Chicago's western suburbs, including its anchor facility, Elmhurst Hospital, a 259-bed state-of-the-art, acute care hospital.

Elmhurst Hospital is one of 20 acute care hospitals worldwide designated as a Planetree patient-centered health care organization and was named to the Becker's Hospital Review list of “100 Great Community Hospitals” in 2014. Under Mastro's leadership, Elmhurst Hospital has opened walk-in clinics in Bensenville, Franklin Park, Lombard, River Forest and Westmont, and the Edward-Elmhurst Health Center in Hinsdale, with a health center scheduled to open in Oak Park in early 2017.

Mastro, a graduate of DePauw University, joined Edward Hospital in 1988 as director of cardiovascular services. She later served as executive director of the Edward Cardiovascular Institute, vice president of operations and vice president of Architectural and Construction Services. She was CEO of Linden Oaks at Edward (now Linden Oaks Behavioral Health) from 2002-2013. While at Linden Oaks, Mastro led the effort to develop Mental Health First Aid in Naperville and surrounding communities. MHFA is an initiative to train community members to identify and respond to early signs of mental illness and substance abuse disorders. In 2015, she launched MHFA in the Elmhurst area “to make responding to a mental health crisis as common as using CPR in a cardiac emergency.”
