It's up to legislature to fix redistricting

I'm one of the 563,000 Illinois voters who signed the petition to place the Independent Map Amendment on the Nov. 8 ballot to amend the Illinois Constitution by removing legislative redistricting authority from the General Assembly.

The current process has politicians choosing their voters rather than voters choosing their politicians. The Independent Map Amendment would have worked against the corruption in Springfield by taking redistricting out of the hands of the General Assembly and giving the duty of drawing legislative voting maps to an 11-member commission independent commission.

Unlike the current redistricting process, the selection of the commission and drawing of the district maps will be open and transparent to the public.

With the Illinois Supreme Court recent rejection, it seems our main chance for this reform is with the legislature. I would urge our legislators to sponsor legislation to improve our election process.
