Indianapolis gallery to show works by Nelson Mandela

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - An Indianapolis art gallery plans to display two dozen drawings and lithographs by Nelson Mandela.

WRTV-TV reports (http://bit.ly/2bMlaAj ) the free exhibit opens Friday at Long-Sharp Gallery. The artwork focuses on the South African leader's years in prison on Robben Island and his thoughts after his release.

Mandela was confined to the prison off the coast of Cape Town for most of his time behind bars. He and others quarried limestone there, working seven hours a day nearly every day for 12 years, until forced labor was abolished on the island

Gallery owner Rhonda Long-Sharp says Mandela's story can inspire peaceful dialogue. Essays by Mandela will be displayed.

Mandela served as his nation's first black president. He died at age 95 in 2013.
