Round Lake police officer shoots, kills Grayslake man

A Round Lake police officer responding to calls about a prowler shot and killed a Grayslake man during a struggle late Friday night, police said.

Lake County Chief Deputy Coroner Orlando Portillo identified the man as 22-year-old Michael Robert Musson Jr. An autopsy is scheduled for Sunday morning.

More than one person called around 10:50 p.m. Friday to report someone pounding on doors on townhouses along the 0-100 block of North Macgillis Drive in Round Lake, Lake County Major Crime Task Force spokesman Christopher Covelli said. One of the callers said the person was trying to break down a door, he said.

When police arrived, Musson - who had a glass shard - confronted the Round Lake officer and a physical struggle ensued, Covelli said. During the struggle, the officer fired and hit Musson.

Musson was pronounced dead at the scene, Covelli said, and the officer was treated at a hospital for minor injuries and released.

The Major Crime Task Force was called shortly after 11 p.m. to investigate the shooting, Covelli said, and the female officer, a 12-year veteran of the department, has been put on paid administrative leave.

Round Lake Police Chief Michael Gillette said no other suspects are being sought.

Police from several Lake County departments helped block off the neighborhood around Macgillis Drive and Treehouse Lane on Friday night, and some residents arriving home early Saturday morning were turned away. The intersection remained blocked Saturday morning, and police on the scene kept mum.

Musson faced charges of aggravated battery to a police officer after a 2013 Grayslake brawl that sent three officers to the hospital, according to court records. A detective checking on possible drug trafficking confronted Musson and another person in possession of cannabis and attempted to arrest Musson, officials said, but Musson resisted and put the detective in a headlock.

Three other people punched and kicked the detective as he lay on the ground, and two backup deputies were punched in the face multiple times before pepper spraying Musson, police said. Three officers were treated at a hospital. Four people were arrested, including Musson's father.
