Two in custody for running drug lab in Waukegan

Two people are in police custody and facing charges for running a chemical drug lab out of their Waukegan apartment, authorities said.

Waukegan Police were called to the 1000 block of Lakehurst Drive at 11 a.m. Tuesday to meet with an apartment complex manager attempting an eviction, authorities said in a news release.

The manager told police he entered the unit to proceed with the eviction when he noticed numerous chemicals inside, authorities said.

Officers later described the scene inside the unit as a "lab" and contacted the Waukegan Police Department's Gang Intelligence Unit for assistance.

Police said the drug lab was processing illegal narcotics - specifically for the manufacture of Dimethyltryptamine, also known as DMT, a hallucinogen classified in Illinois as a controlled substance.

The GIU requested assistance from the Illinois State Police, who responded with a specialized lab team to control the scene.

Due to the unknown chemicals and the densely populated building, the immediate area was evacuated, authorities said. People were allowed to return to their apartments at 11 p.m., authorities said.

Two people have been taken into custody, authorities said. The names of the suspects will not be released until charges are approved by the Lake County States Attorney's Office.
