Boys soccer: Lake County roundup

Vernon Hills sweeps: Vernon Hills opened play in its own 6-team tournament with a 6-0 win over Johnsburg and a 5-0 win over Sycamore.

Goalies Brennan Reback and Nick Burrows combined for both shutouts.

Chris White had 5 goals on the day for the Cougars.

"I thought it was a great way to start the season," Vernon Hills coach Michael McCaulou said. "The boys have been working hard and thinking about today for a long time. It was nice to find the net early in both games, which helped us settle in."

Grayslake Central 3, Wauconda 1: Also at Vernon Hills, Grayslake Central rolled to a victory thanks to 2 goals from senior Nick Walker.

The Rams scored all three of their goals in the second half.

"I think the difference in mentality for each player changed in the second half," Walker said. "We got our first-game jitters out of the way in the first half and played the way we know how to and the way which allows us to take control and pick teams apart."

Mundelein 3, Crystal Lake South 1: Jose Ortega scored 2 goals as Mundelein got a win in its season opener.

Warren 1, Hersey 1: Carlos Mirillo scored Warren's lone goal. Jeffery Pioquinto had 3 saves for the Blue Devils, who are 0-0-1.

Crystal Lake Central 2, Antioch 1: The score was tied 1-1 at halftime but an Antioch mistake in the back led to the winning goal for Crystal Lake Central.

Adam Lynn scored an unassisted goal for the Sequoits, who got 4 saves from goalie Alex Ruano.

Antioch is now 0-1 on the season.

Carmel 2, Lake Zurich 0: Carmel goalie Kyle Knauer had 3 saves.

The Corsairs got goals from Rob Rao (assist by Luke Johnson) and Austin Ehren.
