Slain Indiana deputy's toddler son to receive memorial quilt

KOKOMO, Ind. (AP) - The toddler son of a central Indiana sheriff's deputy fatally wounded in a March shootout will receive a quilt this weekend fashioned from the uniforms of hundreds of police officers.

Howard County Deputy Carl Koontz died after being shot by a gunman who killed himself after shooting the 27-year-old officer.

The Kokomo Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/2aZzYMP ) the nonprofit group Indy Going Blue received more than 1,200 police uniform patches from agencies in every state in Koontz's honor.

Hundreds of those patches were sewn into a king-size quilt emblazoned with the word "Daddy."

Koontz's 1-year-old son, Noah, will receive the quilt Saturday at a Kokomo event that will include a Koontz family fundraiser.

Indy Going Blue President Angi Cheesman says the quilt demonstrates "how strong the bond is among those wearing blue."
