Former Indianapolis officer reaches plea in cocaine case

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - A former Indianapolis police officer who's the local sheriff's son has agreed to plead guilty to a cocaine-dealing charge.

A plea agreement filed Tuesday calls for Nikolas Layton to plead guilty to conspiracy to deal cocaine in exchange for prosecutors dismissing three other cocaine-related felonies. Layton faces a prison term of two to 12 years when he's sentenced Oct. 18.

The Indianapolis Star reports (http://indy.st/2bAYmQK ) that a probable cause affidavit says detectives secretly recorded Layton and two co-defendants selling drugs to informants and snorting cocaine together last fall.

Layton resigned from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department in January following his arrest.

The former 10-year department veteran is the son of Marion County Sheriff John Layton.

A special prosecutor was appointed to handle the case.
