School is back in session for Palatine students

Classes are back in session in Palatine Township Elementary District 15, where about nearly 13,000 students returned to school Wednesday morning for the first time since early June.

District 15 is the state's third-largest elementary district, with 15 elementary schools and four junior highs, along with a preschool early childhood center and alternative public day school. It students come from an approximately 35-square-mile area that includes all or portions of Palatine, Rolling Meadows, Hoffman Estates, Inverness, Arlington Heights, Schaumburg and South Barrington.

District 15 is starting classes a week earlier this year to more closely align its calendar with that of Palatine-Schaumburg Township High School District 211, which held its first day of classes Monday. For now, the school year is scheduled to end May 30, 2017, but that could change with snow days.
