Stretch of Interstate 65 named for Indiana's 1st governor

HENRYVILLE, Ind. (AP) - A stretch of Interstate 65 in southern Indiana has been named to honor the state's first governor.

"Governor Jonathan Jennings Memorial Highway" was named this week during a dedication ceremony at Henryville Junior/Senior High School. The News and Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/2bcWZLu ) that students cheered Wednesday when a large sign was carried through the gymnasium before it was installed. The Indiana Department of Transportation, Indiana Historical Bureau and Indiana Bicentennial Commission had representatives at the event.

The Clark County school was chosen because of its proximity to where the road sign will be posted and to offer students a different learning experience.

The Indiana General Assembly passed legislation earlier this year making the designation.

Jennings also was president of the Indiana Constitutional Convention and helped write the state's constitution.
