Former Illinois village president faces trial over gas buys

SYCAMORE, Ill. (AP) - The former village president of a northern Illinois community faces trial for misconduct and theft charges.

According to The (DeKalb) Daily Chronicle (http://bit.ly/2aPiBbE ), 50-year-old John Munro's trial is scheduled to begin Monday.

Munro is charged with unlawful possession of a credit card, theft and official misconduct in October 2014 while serving as president of Kingston. The town is about 25 miles southeast of Rockford.

He is accused of using a village credit card to buy about $4,000 worth of gasoline for personal use.

If Munro is convicted he faces up to five years in prison.

Munro has maintained that he is innocent and recently turned down a plea deal offered by prosecutors.

Munro served as village president in 1,100-resident Kingston for 12 years before resigning in December 2014.
