Indianapolis police identify suspect shot by officers

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Indianapolis police have identified a man whom officers shot and wounded after he allegedly raised a firearm at them following a foot chase.

Police said Friday that 31-year-old Jacob Wessel of Indianapolis faces preliminary charges of auto theft, narcotics possession, firearms possession, and resisting law enforcement. They say he has been released from a hospital intensive care unit.

Police say officers responding to a report of a stolen vehicle with an armed suspect confronted Wessel on the city's south side Thursday evening and he fled on foot. Officers stopped him at gunpoint and told him to get on the grounder, but police say he began to raise a firearm toward officers and they shot him.

The officers involved are on administrative leave.

Online court records show no attorney for Wessel.
