Fiery Indiana 37 crash kills 1, injures 4 others

ELWOOD, Ind. (AP) - A central Indiana sheriff says one person has died and four others have been hospitalized following a fiery crash involving at least three vehicles.

Madison County Sheriff Scott Mellinger says one person died at the scene of the crash shortly before noon Tuesday on Indiana 37 just south of Elwood. He says two other people were airlifted to Indianapolis hospitals and two others were transported to local hospitals.

A witness to the crash, motorist Heather Haulk, told The (Anderson) Herald she was behind a car when it went left of center and struck a van. She says that caused the van to hit another car, which caught fire.

Trucker Scott Lum said he and other truck drivers used fire extinguishers to put out the blaze before fire trucks arrived.
