Parents of college students should review insurance policies

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - The Indiana Department of Insurance is recommending parents of college-bound students review their policies to make sure their children's possessions are covered.

Insurance Commissioner Stephen Robertson says making sure a college student is properly covered can alleviate unfortunate financial surprises from a denied claim.

The department also recommends checking on health insurance and auto insurance policies for college students. The department says parents should make sure students have a copy of the relevant insurance cards and know about obtaining referrals and approvals before seeking health care treatment.

It also warns a significant move away from home can have an impact on auto insurance rates. If a student doesn't take a vehicle to school, parents may want to check to see if a discount or revised rate is available.
