OSHA finds asbestos violations at southern IN post office

WEST BADEN SPRINGS, Ind. (AP) - The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration says a southern Indiana post office is facing nearly $50,000 in proposed fines for repeated asbestos violations.

It said Monday that it has cited the West Baden Springs post office following a June 3 inspection following by a complaint.

OSHA says inspectors found the post office didn't provide training for employees that worked around broken mastic and tile containing asbestos, a known carcinogen. They also found the post office failed to promptly clean up spills and releases of presumed asbestos-containing material, to ensure the use of dry sweeping to clean them up, and to label areas where they are present.

OSHA has proposed $49,720 in fines.

A U.S. Postal Service spokeswoman had no immediate comment on the findings.
