Take a tour of Elgin's new downtown historic district Aug. 30

Learn about downtown Elgin, its buildings and history in this upcoming walking tour of the new Elgin Downtown Commercial District.

Recently added to the National Register of Historic Places, this new historic district - Elgin's sixth - boasts a variety of buildings ranging from the 1870s to more recent times - all with interesting stories to tell.

Led by Elgin historian Jerry Turnquist and sponsored by the Downtown Neighborhood Association of Elgin, this 90-minute leisurely paced free tour will begin at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30.

Participants should meet at the city parking lot at the southwest corner of South Grove Avenue and Prairie Street. Remember to wear comfortable shoes.

The Downtown Neighborhood Association of Elgin is a nonprofit organization that represents the interests of the downtown area. The Association's purpose is to foster a center of activity and ensure economic stability for the heart of Elgin through organization, design, promotion, and economic revitalization.
