3 things to watch Wednesday at the Republican convention
Wednesday at the Republican National Convention gives Indiana Gov. Mike Pence his first major speech as Donald Trump's running mate. Here's what to watch out for.
• Illinois' neighbor, Gov. Pence, has been applauded by some conservatives as a good pick to balance out Trump's anti-establishment appeal. Will Pence focus on his time in Indiana, introducing himself to a national audience that mostly hadn't heard of him until last week?
• Pence's big night is set be preceded by a parade of Trump's primary rivals: Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and Sen. Marco Rubio via video. Add to that list Newt Gingrich, a finalist to win Pence's job who was passed over in the final evaluations. Will the former opponents be all-in for Trump or will they be looking to take the first steps toward 2020 races?
• The Illinois delegation's key speakers at their morning meeting include California U.S. Rep. Darrell Issa, as well as U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger of Channahon, whose district surrounds the Chicago area just west of McHenry, Kane and Kendall counties. Kinzinger hasn't been the most enthusiastic lawmaker toward Trump in recent months, so his speech could give the delegation something to talk about.
