Future Mundelein arts center announces grand opening festival

A not-for-profit group working to build a performing and fine arts center in Mundelein will host a family festival to kick off the effort.

Northern Lakes Arts Collective's event is set for 2 to 8 p.m., Saturday, July 23, at 741 Diamond Lake Road in Mundelein. Family and kid - friendly events, such as face-painting, carnival rides, live bands and improv skit-building, will occur on the grounds and in NLAC's temporary center throughout the day.

"We are excited and charmed with the idea that NLAC really exists, and it represents such a promising opportunity for the residents and businesses of the village of Mundelein," said village Trustee Kerston Russell, the managing director of arts collective.

The focus of arts collective is to develop a performing and fine arts center in the village of Mundelein. The not-for-profit organization will provide performance and display space for artists, musicians and theatrical performers from across the county.

"This is an opportunity for Mundelein to further distinguish itself and add to the soul and culture of the village," Russell said. "There is a great deal of passion for the arts in this town and many residents who are part of the arts. A performing and fine arts center will be a visitor and business magnet. It will draw people and businesses that want to benefit from the center and be a vibrant part of the creative process."

The family festival will include exhibitions and presentations on painting, sketching, and photography. A fun karaoke segment is planned with demonstrations on guitar, piano and singing. A segment of Kirk Players' Sounds and Sweet Aires, a tribute to Shakespeare, will be presented in the early evening, followed by Q&A with director, Jon L. Lynn and actors.

Food and beverages will be available throughout the day, as well as raffles and prizes.
