Vice chair of Indiana State Board of Education to step down

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - The vice chairwoman of Indiana's State Board of Education says she'll step down next month to concentrate on helping care for her ailing daughter.

Sarah O'Brien announced Thursday that she'll resign from the board after its Aug. 10 meeting to help care of her daughter, who has battled health problems for years.

She said in a statement that it's been "a great honor" to have worked with fellow board members over the years on state education issues.

O'Brien is a fourth-grade teacher at River Birch Elementary School in suburban Avon. She's been a member of the State Board of Education since 2009 and was unanimously elected last year as the board's first vice chair.

The board is chaired by State Schools Superintendent Glenda Ritz.
