EPA awards $600K to 2 Indiana cities to clean up brownfields

MARION, Ind. (AP) - Two Indiana cities have each won $300,000 in federal funding to clean up former industrial sites and redevelop that land for recreational uses or housing projects.

The city of Marion will use its funding to clean up contamination at its former Salvage Yard. That site is located along the Mississinewa (mis-ih-SIHN'-uh-wah) River in the north-central Indiana city.

Marion officials hope to redevelop that land to provide greater recreational opportunities and eventually link it with walking trails.

The city of Indianapolis will use its $300,000 grant to clean up property in the King Park neighborhood north of downtown Indianapolis for a housing project.

The funding from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will be funneled to the cities through the Indiana Finance Authority.
