Storm causes power outages, damage in Evansville area

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) - Crews faced widespread tree damage as they worked to restore electricity and cleanup from a strong thunderstorm that swept through the Evansville area.

Vectren Corp. says utility workers from as far away as Ohio and Tennessee were helping make repairs after more than 23,000 homes and business lost power from Thursday's storm. The utility says most of the 7,000 outages that remained Friday afternoon were in Evansville.

The National Weather Service reported wind gusts of about 70 mph in Evansville as the storm downed many trees around the city.

No injuries were reported, although trees fell onto several houses and other buildings. One tree tumbled onto part of Mount Olive Gailee Church, causing the roof of its fellowship hall to collapse.
