Indianapolis chief: Dallas shootings 'crossed a threshold'

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Indianapolis' police chief says the nation has "crossed a threshold we never wanted to cross" with the fatal shootings of Dallas officers during a protest of police shooting deaths of black men in Louisiana and Minnesota.

Chief Troy Riggs says the five officers killed and seven wounded Thursday in Dallas had been protecting protesters, some of whom "were protesting against" local police.

He tells WISH-TV (http://bit.ly/29t5rSW ) that with those shootings "we have crossed a threshold we never wanted to cross" in the nation.

Riggs says the Dallas shootings appear to be something not seen by law enforcement before.

He plans to send a memo Friday to his department's officers about the Dallas shootings.

Riggs has authorized allowing his officers to wear arm bands to honor the slain and wounded officers.
