Brush up on American art history in Des Plaines

The community is invited to pick up a copy of "A People's Art History of the United States" by Nicolas Lambert and join an informal book discussion at the Des Plaines History Center, 781 Pearson St., from 6-7 p.m. Wednesday, July 20.

The title is now available for checkout at the readers' services desk at the Des Plaines Public Library, 1501 Ellinwood St.

Richly illustrated with more than 200 images, Lampert tells the story of the United States by looking at the art created to promote or protest significant events and movements.

Booklist comments that the author takes American art history out of the museum and into the streets, an "eye-opening, history-enriching, and superbly well-illustrated exposition of the union of art and activism."

The session is free. Call the History Center at (847) 391-5399 to register. This event is co-sponsored by the History Center and the Des Plaines Public Library.
