Former prison guard accused of lying about criminal record

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - A former corrections officer at a central Indiana prison has been indicted on charges of defrauding the state by failing to disclose in his application he had served time in New York for attempted murder, robbery, burglary and kidnapping.

The indictment filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Indianapolis charged 52-year-old Kwame Abdul-Haqq of Anderson with scheming to defraud the state of Indiana out of $175,000 he was paid while working from 2007 until 20015 as an officer at the Pendleton Correctional Facility, a maximum-security facility about 35 miles northeast of Indianapolis.

Court records do not indicate if Abdul-Haqq, who has not yet appeared in court, has an attorney. Abdul-Haqq does not have a listed telephone number.

He also is charged with making false statements on a loan application.
