6 months home detention for former mayor's stepdaughter

HAMMOND, Ind. (AP) - A federal judge has sentenced the stepdaughter of a former northwestern Indiana mayor to six months of home detention followed by two years on probation for embezzling funds from a city court.

The (Munster) Times reports (http://bit.ly/29llTUf) 35-year-old Miranda Brakley was sentenced Thursday. She is the stepdaughter of former Lake Station Mayor Keith Soderquist, who is scheduled to be sentenced Sept. 28.

Brakley pleaded guilty Jan. 20 to stealing thousands from the city court where she was clerk. Soderquist pleaded guilty to attempting to help cover up Brakley's theft.

A jury last year found the former mayor and his wife, Deborah Soderquist, guilty of improperly taking thousands of dollars from Keith Soderquist's re-election campaign fund and the city's food pantry account to gamble at nearby casinos.
